Lately in the NFL, the role of the tight end has increased from barely there to game breaker. The TE usually is matched up with a strong safety or maybe a Strong LB. When the offense utilizes 3 or more WR, the TE is usually covered by a 4th or 5th choice player. When going against certain defensive looks, the TE will create a mismatch that will put him in great positions to help the team.
The Patriots use their TEs well when they go 3 & 4 WRs. The middle of the field is usually guarded by speedsters and not pounders. A TE matched up with a DB sometimes don’t come out in favor of the DB. If a LB is matched up with the TE then the TE has a chance to take them deep and use their speed to beat the LB. TEs are the “X” factor that will help teams advance in the NFC/AFC Championship games.

At Mile High Stadium, the Broncos defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime 29-23. Tim Tebow threw for 316 yards on 10 completions to send the Steelers packing for the 2011 playoffs. Both teams racked up over 400 yards in total offense but it was an 80 yard TD pass from Tebow to Thomas that sealed the deal for the Broncos. The way the Broncos scored was a post route into the Steelers defense that had no safeties in the secondary. It was a horrible defensive call by guru Dick Lebeau as he put 9 people in the box with anticipation of a first down run. Instead the Broncos threw on first down for the first time in the game. The next match up will be against the Patriots and former coach Josh McDaniels, who drafted Tebow 2 years ago, in the AFC Division championship game.
Who are you picking in this game?

Police said a package containing 2 1/2 pounds of marijuana was delivered from Eureka, Calif., to the suburban Kentucky home of Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson on Tuesday, where authorities say they conducted a search and found six more pounds of marijuana inside.

Michelle Gregory, spokeswoman for the California Department of Justice, confirmed to the Cincinnati Enquirer a report published by CaliforniaWatch.org , a group of investigative journalists, on Wednesday night, which detailed the operation. It was initiated by a special marijuana task force after agents discovered a suspicious package at a commercial sorting facility in Sacramento.

Simpson’s teammate, offensive tackle Anthony Collins, was also present when a woman, identified as Aleen Smith, 27, accepted the package on Tuesday. All three were questioned at the residence, but no arrests were made at the time.

Simpson told police that he lived at the residence and gave officers consent to search the premises, Gregory said. Police allegedly found other empty parcels, scales and packaging material inside Simpson’s home.

“The house was set up as a potential distribution network,” said Tommy LaNier, head of the National Marijuana Initiative, a group that is funded by the Office of National Drug Control Policy and helps coordinate marijuana enforcement operations around the United States. “They had it all set up to receive supplies of high-grade marijuana from Northern California, and from there, it was being distributed from that residence,” LaNier told California Watch.

All the packages were sent from an area of Northern California known as the “Emerald Triangle,” LaNier said. The area is known for producing large amounts of marijuana.

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said he had heard rumors of the bust but had no further comment.

“There’s nothing of substance in the development of rumors that we’re aware of,” he said. “There’s nothing to hang a hat on at this point.”

Simpson had four catches for 136 yards last week in a 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos .

The NFL is 131 days into the lockout and yet no deal. This time the hold up falls on the shoulders of the players. The players are taking their time analyzing the offer given by the owners to make sure that the offer is in the best interest of the players 5 to 7 years from now.
So this whole ordeal started when the owners ask the players to collectively give back a billion dollars from their salaries and in turn the owners would reward them by adding two games. It’s bad enough they get banged up for 16 full games. Adding two games to the schedule isn’t much of a reward.

Do you feel that the players are in the right?

So for the first time in NFL history a team under .500 has made the playoffs. The Seahawks pulled it off by winning the NFC West with a 7-9 record. So they hosted the Wildcard game against the Saints. From jump the Seahawks went to work. Shout out to Tampa native Mike Williams that did his thing. He is a product of the Tampa Bay Youth Football League (TBYFL). He had great game. The secondary of the Saints were very suspect. The Saints secondary only allowed 272 yards passing, but the plays were huge in helping the Seahawks.
Drew Brees attempted 60 passes and had 407 yards passing. People always said if you can’t run the ball you can’t win January football. It’s true. You got to be able to run the ball. The Saints really failed and needs to regroup before the ship sinks to the bottom.

Well my week 7 picks faired out ok considering some crazy and unsuspected outcomes occurred. These are the ones I missed and why.

Bengals…. If the Bengals would have played all four quarters like they played after halftime, they wouldn’t have had a problem with the Falcons. Matt Ryan played the game of his career and so did Roddy White. The hole was too deep for the Bengals to get out of.

Eagles…. Well the game was controlled by the Eagles for a majority of the game. Two words “Michael Vick”

Saints…. Well offensively the Saints scored more points then the Brown’s offense. Two INTs by the Brown’s D didn’t help the Saints.

Ravens…. The Bills are just a few plays away from being a good team. Ravens D couldn’t maintain the speed of the Bills O.

Bucs…. The “show up late to the party” Bucs have a habit of spotting teams points before they play. They held the Rams but let go of too many field goals.

Cardinals…. After beating the Saints the week before, I would think that the Off and Def would keep the same intensity against the Seahawks which they didn’t.

Chargers…. All year they did well at home. Not this time.

Vikings…. Too many turnovers gave the game to the Packers.

These are my picks for week 7… HOME team in CAPITAL letters…

-3 TAMPA BAY vs St. Louis {APPROVED}

-3 Pittsburgh vs MIAMI {DENIED}….with the return of Big Ben last week, he still a little off with his timing. Going against a 7th ranked pass D is too much for him to adjust to in one week. I don’t see Miami turning the ball over too much. Steelers don’t have a strong running game.

-3 ATLANTA vs Cincinnati {DENIED}….. Bengals are challenging a 27 ranked passing D. The Bengals running game is up against a 14th ranked running D. ATLANTA doesn’t have the consistent running game to keep the Bengals offense off the field.

-9 KANSAS CITY vs Jacksonville {APPROVED}….. With Jac playing with a back up QB, the running game will be challenged by a 3rd rank running D. Jax Has the 20th ranked running D. With KC avg. 4.9 yards a carry, the Jax won’t have an answer for the Chiefs running game. The play of Matt Cassell is improving.

-3 TENNESSEE vs Philadelphia {DENIED}….. Titans have a decision to make a QB. TENN. has the 28th ranked passing defense. If Kevin Kolb has another great game, it could get ugly quick.

-3 CHICAGO vs Washington {DENIED}….. With the Bears struggling on the OL they will have trouble protecting Cutler and picking up 3rd downs. Wash has a great chance to sack J Cutler in double digits.

-13 NEW ORLEANS vs CLEVELAND {APPROVED}

-13 BALTIMORE vs Buffalo {APPROVED}

-3 San Francisco vs CAROLINA {DENIED}… the pass happy 49ers is going up against the #1 pass D in the NFL. With the rushing game of the Panthers looking promising, QB Smith, of the 49ers, would have to play a mistake free game. The Rushing O of the 49ers must control the ball a majority of the game for the 49ers to be in it. Don’t see it happening.

-7 SEATTLE vs Arizona {Denied}….. With Seattle owning the 29th pass D, it’s gonna be difficult for SEATTLE to control the 13th pass O of the Cardinals. Since SEATTLE has the 31 rush O, I don’t see a ball control afternoon for the Seahawks.

-2.5 SAN DIEGO bs New England {APPROVED}

-7.5 DENVER vs Oakland {DENIED}….. With the Raiders QB Campbell back in the starting line-up and a controlling running game, the Raiders will possess the ball for a hefty majority of the game. The Broncos own the 27th run D going against the Raiders 9th rank rush O. With Denver’s inability to throw with a 32nd pass O, mistakes cannot occur or the Broncos will suffer. I don’t see a mistake free day from DENVER.

-2.5 GREEN BAY vs Minnesota {DENIED}…..with a banged up team like the Packers, I don’t see enough fire power from the Packers to maintain the Vikings Off. AP of the Vikings should have a field day rushing against the Packers. Also Randy Moss should give the Packer secondary fits all afternoon.

-3 DALLAS vs NY GIANTS {APPROVED}

One word…. Favre! That’s right he’s back. Brett Favre has reported to the Minnesota Vikings. After a long wait and anticipation, the answer has finally came from the heavens. He’s back for one more year. Brett is the epitome of the saying, “The same thing that makes you laugh, will make you cry.” An example of Brett’s last play of the 2009 post season for the Vikings. Still the Vikings have a great chance to getting back to the NFC Championship game. Now with the addition of Toby Gerhart, the passing game of the Vikes can take a backseat to the “hopeful” power running game of the Vikings. Imagine the Vikings new offense in 2010 was the wishbone. That’s pretty much what’s needed in order for Favre to stay healthy. I can’t see Favre dropping back to pass 400 times this year. His body won’t be able to take it. Favre is doing exactly what George Foreman did for boxing, letting the youngsters know how serious the “old timers” were about their craft and training.
Brett was met by punter Longwell at the airport when Favre touched down. Longwell reported that Favre came back for the players in the locker room. Now that is a true friend. Going beyond yourself to help others is the greatest sign of a teammate. My Nostradamus prediction is if the Vikings draft all lineman next year, Favre will be back!

Oh boy, this might be the best AFC WR tandom in the NFL. People really under estimate the value of a ” across the middle” WR. Terrell Owens , in his career, hasn’t had a WR opposite of him that could help stretch the field. BUF showed the best chance. Now in CIN, Owens can split the spotlight and cause havoc on opposing teams secondaries and create more TDs thru the air. Fellow Pro Bowl WR Chad OchoCinco can now benefit by having a Pro Bowl WR along side him. OchoCinco can now show off his powerful double break routes. Always being double teamed slowed down his abilities to get open. When TJ Hous…. was with CIN, he allowed more options for the offense. CIN hasn’t had that type of WR like Owens. A void that hasn’t been filled since TJ Hous. With Tampa Native Caldwell at slot, CIN has the chance to throw themselves into contentions of winning the AFC Championship?

What do you think?
